Breaks and Festivals

Went to a festival at the weekend. It was a great weekend, but I found myself missing breaks.

Plenty of breakbeat, mostly in the form of drum n bass and Krafty and Aston Freestyler both managed a set that was mostly 'breaks', but any other name I pinned hopes on turned out with something else.

Really made me realise just how lucky we were to have a whole tent of breaks at the Glade Festival all those years ago.

Would love to see a space at future events for nurturing the breaks of old and new stuff.

In the meantime, here's a video from Glade that I found on a hard drive and archived onto youtube. Skip to 5 mins for Tayo in the Breaks Tent.

Dusty psytrance memories of the early glades :badger:

Breaks at Glade was ace, thanks to people like Biff supporting and pushing that. Not sure we will ever see it again, but festivals like Mucky Weekender, maybe Shindig, Camp Bestival have a bit happening, but without regular events/clubs supporting the scene between festivals I can't see breaks building any momentum.

I see so few DJs and producers who want to be called "breaks" so I am not really surprised old breaks names aren't playing breaks anymore. Even Krafty in his bio doesn't mention breaks apart from Breakspoll and his Slam The Breaks series. Bio from an event soon. The big names are still the big names, and they dont/won't care about the scene as a scene means competition from other DJs I guess. Their scene is their brand and many of them seem happy playing to <100 people on Twitch 🤷‍♂️

I've been looking today at the first ever NSB website I made 20 years ago, then everyone wanted to be breaks, to be part of something. The site was needed to bring people together, let people know about events. I was thinking its probably needed again, e.g. I didn't even know that Krafty Kuts event was happening, and if I don't know most events are happening, how does the casual listener? Anyway.

Positives: I hear a lot of great new music on NSB Radio. NSB Radio listeners is the busiest its ever been. Predominantly listeners are not in UK, Russia is 30-40% of our listeners, then USA, then UK, Spain, Germany, Asia. Breaks FM is back and thats super positive as they have so many contacts to pull out the bag. Started getting emails to my Breakspoll account last few months (Freskanova etc). So maybe there is slight hope of a resurgence.

It was Mucky Weekender I went to. Was hoping for more breaks. Justin Rushmore and Carl Loben were hopefuls, but not to be. A Skillz was excellent, but the music changes so fast it's hard to keep up. I heard Leeroy Thornhill's main set was great, bit no real idea what he played. He did another set in the wood stage which was nice.

Anyways, I did some acid and it all turned out brilliant. Bez's house party is brilliant, partly because Bez does practically nothing and partly because so many people seem to get involved. Some classics too.

There's a lot of drum n bass flying about these days.

I find Krafty naturally plays a lot of breaks and hip hop. Been quite consistent through his livestreams and did the business on the night.
