Favourite Sequencer Short Cut
Ok - so i was just thinking that there aren't enough really useful threads on this forum any more and was also thinking about how the most useful thing i learnt from being in the studio with Steve Hedflux was a new shortcut.
so - i thought everyone could post their favourite shortcuts.
I'll leave steve to mention the shortcut he taught me, so i'll start with the shortcut:
* Cubase : J : toggles snap to grid on and off
* Cubase: with scissor tool selected hold down alt and cut an audio part, further cuts will be made along the length of the part in a multiple of the first slice that you created. Particularly useful when snap to grid is on and you want to make some glitchy edits and cut a part into 32nds.

Cubase shortcuts:
ctl+d = duplicate event (really useful for building up drum tracks and works in all windows)
p = set left and right markers around selected events (bloody useful for quickly settin up loops)
not really keyboard shortcuts, but a brilliant little shortcut that is friggin genius (aplogies if you already do this)
midi channel inserts. use them in all sorts of wicked ways, but mainly for...sending the same midi signal to separate vst instruments. i.e. set the main channel up to go to a more trebley bass sound. then buss the signal through the inserts to a sub patch. at the same time buss it to a midi gate on a pad track and you have a gate that follows the bassline. you can also put midi efx on the send so that you could do something like trigger a kick everytime the bass plays a note or whatever.
in any DAW I'm sure it's the same, but the routing is possibly the most incredibly powerful thing for bending your music and getting really innovative ideas.
good thread.

great thread...
im still using cubase vst32/5 on my imac until my powerbook gets its shiz togetha but heres a few, im sure theyr probly well known but anyway
mixer window: apple + *
loop on/off : /
in midi edit: apple H to toggle multiple velocities / transpose
duplicate part: apple k
in midi edit: 1 through 8 toggles snap ratio
cant think of any more rite now
ones that i hate are + and - on the num pad for tempo change... so easy to bump by accident, then you realise youv recorded a heap of audio 3bpm too quick...

amen to that!!! saves fuck loads of time, especially when cubase decides to go *poof* when you load up that one filter too many!zooloo wrote:apple + s = save!!!

Other ones i can think of at F4 on the PC to load up the VSTIns and Outs.
I have my own few set up that are extremely useful, like
Ctl-Alt-B = bounce selected events
Ctl-Alt-M = add midi track
Ctl-Alt-A = add audio track
Ctl-Alt-F = add folder track
Ctl-Alt-G = add group track
Ctl-Alt-E = add efx track
Ctl-Alt-R = reverse selected audio/event
and lastly Ctl-Shift-R = audio mixdown. (this is carried over from my heavy use of ableton days)
it's really easy to set up your own shortcuts in cubase, and it's such a time saver, well worth it.
last, but not least, g and h keys are exceptionally useful for zooming in (h) and out (g) in any arrange/piano roll/clip edit window. zooms into the point where the time bar is. brilliantly handy.

incidently i bought a set of these: http://www.editorskeys.com/
very useful. I knew most of the shortcuts but nice to have them staring you in the face.
oh yeah keys 1-0 (not on the numpad) select different tools. Very useful.

Plenty of Logic love from me Neil!high eight wrote:No Logic love in 'ere? Could do with learning a few shortcuts for that if anyone has any?

My current favourites:
= splits a midi sequence according to the cycle - great for cutting the best takes out of a recording
shift + i - select all within locators
f to bring up that little box with all the numbers (what the hell's that called? handy anyway!)
shift + m to select muted objects - handy for clearing a tune up when most of the elements are sorted. just make sure you haven't muted anything you want to keep

the navigation shortcuts - ctrl + mousewheel to zoom in and out, shift + mousewheel to move left and right, alt + draggy box to zoom in and alt +
click to zoom out again.
and flipping between screensets on the number-keypad are a great shortcut - especially with 2 monitors! Can't remember if you had that going or not, but if not it's well worth setting them up, does amazing things to workflow!
also, for a while i had previous/next plugin setting assigned to a couple of keys on the keyboard, and the same with previous/next exs24 instrument. very handy, but they're now assigned to buttons on my bcr2000 instead

more logic:
esc brings up the toolbar - then either click on desired tool or press number equating to tool you want ie by the order of icons running left to right and top to bottom. esc twice returns you to selector.
holding control and click dragging a box around the area you want to zoom in on (I have it assigned to my RMB). then ctrl and click not on an object to zoom back out to the previous view
/ cuts an object where the cursor is.
k toggle metronome
r brings up a dialogue box for 'repeat objects'
l loops an object
c toggle cycle mode (sequencer playback loop)
control+tab cycles between open windows in logic - good if youve got little screen real estate and want to edit between the arrange page and the matric for example
a audio record dialogue box
I ALWAYS use the numeric keypad by my right hand for the transport:
enter = stop/go to beginning of song or beginning of cycle period
0 = play
1 = rewind 1 bar
3 = ffrd 1 bar
4 = rewind 8 bars
6 = ffrd 8 bars
* = record
and of course you can customise eveything in Logic anyway I think its option+k to bring up the keyboard shortcuts
@Kickflip:
what arrangements of screensets do you find most useful? I only have one for the arrange page, one for mixer environment and one for matrix/hyper edit (for anal midi cc programming) but I think I'm probably missing out on this feature.
