Make sure you patent your concrete mixing style.

hmuh, most of the ideas i get, that i'm convinced sound fucking awesome, wouldn't translate too easily into words. there's the option of whistling etc into your mobile's voice recording facility, but that has the very serious "i feel like a cunt doing this" factor to overcome.

Pretty basic stuff really but as soon as you get an early draft of your track, render it to MP3/Wav asap.

The track is then easily accessible so you can play it whenever, for example add it randomly into your playlists.

Something about doing this makes it a lot easier to pick out what is good/bad about it, especially with the monitor off. Also by listening to it out of your sequencer context, natural ideas seem to develop better.

Good thread :!:

yes actually having two sets of speakers - your nice monitors and then maybe some JBLs so that you can hear your efforts how other people are more likely to would be very helpful.

at least this is what Aquasky do. :D

This DOES work.

Iv also got a mp3player with a little mic so when im humming a tune to myself looking like an idiot. I decide to top my idiot apperance by humming it into my mp3 and try and re-make it at home.

works very nicely (altho my mate found em all and decided i was mentaly ill - which is true)

When you're arranging, every now and then listen to your work with the monitor (screen) turned off. You'll be amazed how much of your attention is focused on your arrange page.

forget about competing in music

it's not a competition, millions will say it's all about sellability

i say bollocks

do something that's personal and individual and make the world a better place ... the standout people like Aphex, Si Begg, Tipper etc didn't become global cult figures from creating run of the mill toss

be an artist first and foremost, create your own world with within your music

or ignore all that and add to the heap of homogenous throwaway rubbish

Autechre on their last album worked pretty much totally hands on with hardware and no screens, they got caught up in arrangements on screens and now love creating with their hands and minds rather than their eyes

and the crap i've produced 'sounds' better when it's being played away from the pc set up

mmm there isn't a convenient way in my room to position the speakers either side of me when i'm at the computer, so to get the proper stereo effect i have to move away from the screen and look at the wall... 8)

i regularly practice the art of mixing meditation by closing my eyes stopping moving and concentrating solely on the music i hear.

blind people have better hearing as your senses become tuned to accomodate for the one that's missing....so get a blind bloke to mix your tunes!
