agree with this, after playing around for hrs on my phones, i'd play the track to my missus

- would have a totally different perspective on certain elements and structure etc.

this is followed swiflty by being drowned out by the tv and me retreating to my headphones.

I'm a fan of the ten minute mix.

Ie I spend ten minutes going through and mixing the tune. Basic gain staging, very crude eqing, maybe some verbs and a bit of volume automation.

then i bounce it down to a stereo track, import that back into the project.

that ten minutes won't get you a well balanced track, but it should capture the initial vibe you want.

then, however deep down the signal chain rabbithole you go down later, with all the tweaks and stuff, you can refer back to your first gut instincts. the instincts that are closer to the listeners first impressions.
