My first breaks track

Post by ~Lander~ » Wed Mar 04, 2015 9:13 pm

So, I gave making some breaks a go. I have found it a bit more of a struggle as I hasn't done it before.

I really felt the whole Aussie breaks sound, not the shit stuff but the nice lush pretty shit and wanted it to be akin to that. To me it sounds like there is some shit missing but I don't really know what else I should be putting in there. Totally open to ideas etc... :)

https://soundcloud.com/leftwingrecordin ... eftwing011 I have somehow done a track that has been released. I know, I don't know how either.

made me think a bit of andrea parker :woo:

my ill informed opinions can be summarised thus -
drums had nice swing and electro feel
bass was round and warm but needs more presence
fuck with the vocal more
the melodic twinkles were too far away and pulled the groove back a bit
:beatz: skillz :sam:

needs more quantize and swing in the drums - sounds a bit loose in the rhythm

I'd try quantizing everything to 16B or 16C then maybe adjusting a few things to make them a bit early / late

also kick needs some velocities adjusting - when there's two close together make one a bit quieter, probably the second of each pair

nice chill vibe though

Your opinion isn’t ill informed Bobby my dear, it is an opinion and totally appreciated :D

I'll sort the twinkles out. I most certainly wanted sparkles in this one. Sure there is all kinds of mix issues as I made it in headphones again

I am actually happy with the bass, for once in my life. This has never happened before. I had it a bit louder yday and will probs bang some gentle compression on it.

Sweet, thanks Tam, that is the kind of shiz I am talking about, I don’t think I would have ever done anything with the velocity on the kick.

Kinda happy I finally made some breaks, this was what I planned to do all the way back in 2007. In it for the long game I guess

I feel like the drums are a bit thin and while I like the snap on the snare its missing tons of bottom end thunk to make it punch.

Same with the kick really, it sounds a bit weedy. Maybe give the snare a bit of a boost around 200-500hz and the kick around 100-120hz and see if that gives them a bit more boom.

Could also try running the drums through a multiband compressor or something like ozone 5 and giving them a boost overall. A bit of EQ, limiting and dynamic compression could really bring them to life.

Otherwise I'd suggest layering some phatter sounds underneath before doing any of that to give them a bit more beef.

The sounds are nice and I like the vibes, just reckon once the drums are a bit more having it the rest will fall into place.

listening on ma new k702's.

basically

what they all said

id probably go with changing the snare for a chunkier/fatter one tbh

and maybe try some parallel compression on your drums

Sweet, tried that compression business and it sounds better. Also, would banging it though a pre amp be helpful?? I am used to making such subtle sounds this is all a bit confusing to me.
