Interesting read on the obsession of compression.

wrote my dissertation on this

horses for courses really, sometimes it suits the music.

comparing re mastered versions of old tracks to the originals is a good way of seeing how much things have changed, 9 times out of 10 the remasters have bugger all dynamic range

still hasnt stopped me asking for loud fuck masters

this site is quite good if youre looking for comparisons http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/list/year/desc

that sounds like a good dissertation topic 'shapers :)

not sure what mine will be on yet, the scourge of social media on the music industry maybe?

makes me laugh as all the kiddies on my course compress the fuck out of their EDM and don't realise how poor it sounds (imo)

katy perry is louder than megadeath ....... but not as loud as me

haha how loud do you want it?

the real problem is in people trying to achieve this loudness in the wrong way

Loud mixes dont have to lack punch and dynamics

The loudness wars was started by the radio station engineers, they invented a kind of audio crack to which we are all now addicted

its all about tricky use of distortionz - not compression

should have listened to the vaccines if you want to hear music that has been smashed so bad it makes the ears bleed (and that's nothing to do with the musical content)

thing is, re: Simon's post, people/the public haven't changed. what he seems to be saying is that HE isn't making music he's happy with. that's no-one's fault but his own.

sure, you get into the rhythm of making music to pay the rent. that's completely understandable.

most of my favourite bands have day jobs. a large percentage of the electronic artists i like probably do too.

i saw one of the bands i used to be in reform because a label was interested in a demo. they'd split because they hadn't 'made it'. they weren't happy. the album wasn't as good as they were, they were lied to, promised tours when they made x amount of sales in territories, when the label had only printed half of that amount. i saw what the machine does to artists when they are at a low level early doors. it put me off making music for labels or other people.

the DIY ethic is what enables you to make, record and play your music to people. social media is a great way of doing this. it levels a playing field. you just have to be as honest in your media as you do your music. Clutch, one of my favourtie bands said in a recent interview 'thank god we didn't have a hit single when we were on a major, it would have ruined us'. they went on to have a 20 year career of making music and touring the world.

music is supposed to be a personal communication from artist to the world. or at least the people in the room. social media is just an extension of that.

the game has changed. i think for the better. maybe not financially for artists, but i come from a world where many bands i've been in, or been into, have existed without recording a note. they've played to full venues and had a good time, and given other people a good time. that's what it's all about.

not having a pop here, but in a nutshell I think this is the kind of language (that a lot of us use, me included) that doesn't help musicians/artists.

of course you're right, he's changing/refining/adapting, so yes, from a marketing point of view he needs rebranding. I don't think we used to talk about artist development as branding. If a band changed direction, that used to be acceptable, we just used to say they changed direction.

But the public are now all about brands. which is a cynical way of being imho. Brand allegiance is the new tribal system.

Oh FFS.

he is rebranding. changing his name. whether you like the terminology or not I couldn't give a fuck - thats what it is.

the public are not about brands, brands are about brands. you dont like them, I dont care. there's nothing wrong with being a brand. Any product, of which music is one, requires its own brand. his new brand is Simon Shackleton. Its not cynical, its just life. Its business. End of story.
