my normal order of tunage is:

make some beats

make some melodic vibes / chords / vocals etc

write approx 30 basslines

throw 29 away

i find it easier to write good basslines when i have something to react to

Yes, I learn something from absolutely everything I make but it doesn't always make me feel better
things to remember:

all music is made within the maker's limitations. be it gear, imagination or experience.

imho you have the imagination, which is the 'x factor' (original meaning). the other things just take time.

every person whose tunes you rate were EXACTLY where you are now.

I think it is usual to have more unfinished tunes than finished ones.

FWIW I think the tune has merit. As tam suggested move away to something else. no-one says you can't come back later.

Distance brings perspective.

:) Thank you Phil :)

I appreciate your wisdom :)

Perspective is difficult for me sometimes.

I am pretty sure I will read that post again when I am having a hard time :)
https://soundcloud.com/leftwingrecordin ... eftwing011 I have somehow done a track that has been released. I know, I don't know how either.

its' not my wisdom. it's nicked/remembered from other people who are actually worth listening to.

Yeah, I was gonna say. I can't pick up half of my shit on my shit laptop speakers and they are actually pretty decent as laptop speakers go.

eq your bass whilst monitoring on small speakers FTW

normally means you add a bump between 120 and 160 hz

switch back to main monitors

i agree im not making music for laptops - but i tend to do the majority of my production sat on the couch with my laptop - so would be good to nail it without wasting hours - then i know it would transfer regardless of output device.

that renaissance bass from waves was free on some black friday

also i can imagine buying habits - flicking through tracks via your laptop speakers - mine would fail miserably on the bass front, really looking to take my sales to the next level and hit double figures.

I have found the only way I can do bass ok is to get it done right at the start of my track and build the rest of the shit around it.
I just can't do it Tams way (making most of the track and then going back and doing the bass). It makes me incredibly frustrated and stops my enjoyment of making music :violin:

IDK. HTH.

lander how loud do you have yer kick drums?

maybe you're running out of headroom which means all your base are belong to us your bass will sound shonky

they should peak at around -8 db so they look like this:

Hey Tambles, I don't know without checking. I used to make everything so quiet I think I have totally gone the other way now
My mixes are not normally *too* bad, far from perfect but I am still not happy with how things sound in the stoooodio etc :(
