Making beats roll

Post by bUmP » Thu Jan 06, 2011 10:51 am

Apologies if there is already a thread on this as I cant find it using the search. I just wondered what techniques people use to make their beats roll? By roll I guess I mean have a natural sounding momentum that doesnt sound over programmed - does that make sense?

I know some people use funk loops underneath beats, different swing settings to help humanise the beats but what else, any other tips and trickery?

Anyway Happy New Year you slags :D

a snare kick snare on 16ths much lower in volume between your main snare and kick or a snare on 16th triplets leading to the kick. when I get home I will post up a screen shot to show you what I mean.

i use open and closed hats, where the open hat hits before the snare, giving a tissum/crack kind of rhythm, and 'grace notes' like model says:

so not
boom-tish, boom-boom-tish

but boom-t-tish,t-boom-boom-tish.

if that makes any sense.

the audio clip has two bars of the beat in the image on its own then 2 bars with it layered with an amen break which i had dropped in as a .rex file, qauntized and side chained to the main kick and snare. its a straight forward plod kick snare pattern but by adding the quiet snares around the kick and the triplet snare roll makes it feel rolling.

i dont program/sequemce my beats wit midi, rather load samples/loops straight in the arrange window and edit things around, i found i like better to work with say 3 different snare sounds cut off 3 different loops. From 1 loop i take say 3 different versions of the same snare, this 3 differ already a lil on their timbrical and amplitud0rz characterists , so you end up with 9 differnt snares rather than have 1 snare with 128 values of velocity to "explore"... makes any sense?

i mean if you manage to use at least once the 9 differnt snares in an 8 bar loop ill bet you it will sound way cooler than having 1 single snare sampe and trigger it 9 times all at different velocities.

mess as fuck but might turn into food for though xx

+1 for the highpassing loop on top

this can work really well, fill out the beat give it a more live, natural feel. almost like adding overheads to a drum track this is used all the time in dnb where they often layer several loops + kick and snare etc

people often layer up diffrerent kicks and snares together too for overall fatter sounds

you could try bussing the whole beat and processing it? like parallell compression (mixing often heavily compresssed signal with dry signal) or tape saturation (which can cause compression) , etc
