It even says grime in one of the tags. Very chilled / understated grime.

so one might reasonably assume you'd be ok with a dj who played
a. deep obscure techno
b. morris dancing music
c. the theme from strictly ballroom
d. a cliff richards medley
e. englebrt humperdink
f. commercial deep house
all in the same set?
you'd gurn hard to that eclectic mix?

Just so everyone's clear:
Wikipedia wrote:UK garage (also known as UKG) is a genre of electronic music originating from the United Kingdom in the early 1990s. The genre usually features a distinctive syncopated 4/4 percussive rhythm with 'shuffling' hi-hats and beat-skipping kick drums. Garage tracks also commonly feature 'chopped up' and time-shifted or pitch-shifted vocal samples complementing the underlying rhythmic structure at a tempo usually around 130 BPM.

I would be ok with this. There would be parts I would enjoy more than others, mainly A, but I think things should be about sounds not labels

the labels describe the sounds.

Ok, so, over the years, musically I have changed style but the general feel of what I am into has always had the same undertones. It should be about that IMO.

we need labels - they help define things in their proper context. without them all 4/4 dance music would simply be described as untz untz.
that said, that doesn't make the labelling of things either easy or accurate. I had to pick a genre for my latest song for the shops. It's labelled tech house. It doesn't sound like any of the other tech house I listen to on Beatport but it needs a home somewhere. Juno ignored my labelling or perhaps they dont have a tech house section and put it under club house / funky. It just goes to show that the labels themselves are fluid and just pointers. Not concrete, debatable if you want but ultimately - like you say, not as important as the music itself.

For the music industry genres are a way to label target groups. See it like that "People who bought/liked this also bought/liked:" thing. Imagine Beatport without genres and try to listen through the releases of only one day! (over 1000 new releases only yesterday)
Genres on soundcloud maybe have a different purpose, to look cool or "innovative". Well, I haven't taken these tags seriously anyways.
