I don't use one personally but if you laptop is getting really hot give the fan a quick blast with some compressed air.

I've often got it on my bed, so the duvet stops any circulation/insulates the cpu.

at the moment, I'm just using the box it came in, which seems to be doing the trick.

I use my on my duvet too but regular cleaning seems to keep it sweet, failing that anything that will just raise it up will work too.

Living in bedsits and whatnot, I invariably kept my laptop on my bed which I found would make it especially prone to overheating.

Putting a book underneath so that the air can circulate properly pretty much stops this problem.
