you're in luck - theres one in peckham. You have to literally sift through food on the floor of the shop and climb over crack heads to get to the till. Quite an adventure i tell you ;-)

:chin: that's a bit stereotypical.

Most stereotypes are grounded in truth.

I'm with Techboy on this one.
All my friends in Italy who say they download music cause they can't afford to buy cds go for expensive meals, big bottles of wine, nice clothes...
which ain't available on p2p. ;)

Don't agree there, most people who stereo type aren't bothered about looking deeper.

Indeed it is. You saying it's not true though? ;)

Seriously though. I've never met anyone who genuinely couldn't afford to buy a piece of music software - who don't go out to clubs/drinking/whatever. These same people afford 1210s and mixers. They're a bit harder to steal though! The fact is, if you can't readily afford something, the way to go about it should really be to make some sacrifices.

I'm not trying to lord it up. I've used cracks in the past. I'm just trying to point out that all these excuses don't hold their salt (it's ok because of I'm a poor, deprived, struggling musician etc etc ...) and that the simple fact is that people would just rather steal it.

Not always - for example, all french people travel by bicycle with baguettes under their arms and onions around their necks, wear berets and striped shirts, and go 'haw-he-haw-hee-haw' all the time. Its true, ive seen it with my own eyes.

I agree that totally believing in stereotypes is wrong, especially if you refuse to allow for change in your opinion over time.

But stereotyping exists in society as a necessity. It allows us to make judgements about things and people we know nothing about based on previous experience.

For example: You wouldn't leave your baby alone with a tiger would you?

Why not? Say you don't know anything about this Tiger, it might be totally tame and love playing with children. Nontheless, you have to assume that it is the same as all tigers and not leave it alone with your child.

Is this an unfair stereotype? Yes... but it's necessary.

Fair point, but as humans we all have the ability to think above our natural animal brain, the moralistic side (the side that's usualy subdued by alcohol etc.. which then makes us twats) so whether the tiger is nice or not is of no relevance, whether the tiger is hungry or not is, because if it is it will eat your baby to survive.

I think this is the key...

For some people it's hard to see the similarity between the two things. On the one hand you have a Technics deck, you have an actual tangible piece of hardware, which you can see and touch. Then, on the other, you have a piece of software which only really exists whilst it's code executes on your CPU.

Then there's the method of theft... in one case you have to literally remove someone else's property. In the case of software you can merely make a copy - this means there is no direct "victim" to the crime. Your gain is no-one's loss... except the software company's - but of course, that doesn't matter because they're a "Big Evil Company" (TM). You can even do it remotely over P2P software! It's hardly a crime at all!

Unfortunately, these are the social constructs that are going to have to be overcome before people see software (and music / video piracy) as the crime that it is.

As we get further into the digital age, this is going to become more and more of a problem, and people need to be educated NOW.

Yes we do.

So, as I say, you have to make adequate provision for your opinion to change - but in the interim I think you're quite within your rights to trust in your stereotypes.

e.g. Gaz is quite right to state "in my experience, most people who say they can't afford music software still spend money on going out, drinking, weed etc." if that is actually what he has found to be the caSE. When someone pops up who says "I can't afford software" and is also living on benefit, and never spending money on anything that isn't a necessity - then that's a different matter and I'm sure he'll change his opinion appropriately.
