I used to live above a shop in Edinburgh run by 2 Indian brothers, full turban, beard, kirpan and the rest and they had the broadest Scots accents you've ever heard.

You went in for the 'face lick' right? That usually gives away a big ol mexican. You're from Chihuahua then? I haven't been since they cancelled my pasaporte. 'Mi mujer es una Quesadilla' as they say in mexico, often.

I'm not. What my post actually communicates is that I am not having a tattoo because of what someone said on the internet. The one I am going to have is for reasons all my own. :)

Ah good. I will now not have a tattoo because of what you just said on the Internet.

I can understand that. To be fair, it's usually a certain combination of beard and female head covering, and/or I hear them speaking it themselves. If it makes you feel any better, I do
exactly the same with anybody I see wearing a nametag which implies they might be from Finland (or maybe Estonia).

i think yeah most men who wear muslim dress and have died beards and hold their friends hands probably like being greeted in arabic but you can never be too sure what people's first language is!

Fair point. I have to say, I'm pretty conscious of trying not to cause offence and just being friendly to everyone, though.

i tend to try to smile and say hello/nod a greeting. if i'm in england, i kind of think that's what most people expect. if i'm abroad, i shout loudly and slowly, obviously.

Mate of mine said that to some Australian traffic cops at one of their random drink/drive roadblocks, and apparently they weren't amused.

yes i don't say it to policemen, even Australian ones, they don't like that kind of thing in my experience and you end up looking like a bit of a dick
