devil's advocate mode on.
Though that looks quite serious, it doesn't look like you lost a pint of blood. Since you didn't lose that much, there was really no reason for an ambulance and you where in no real danger of suffering anything more serious.
Given these facts, the NHS person was fully justified to tell you to jgowi!

bollox. and old lady falls over in Skipton and there's a paramedic responder there in minutes.

the person on the phone should have sent one of them. they could have actually assessed the situation. it's not all about blood loss, but about permanent tissue damage if not dealt with.

we have an nhs. afaik ed's not the kind to call if it's not needed.

Too right. Playing hard in the UK healthcare system doesn't work.

If you're feeling poorly and want some lovely druqs from your GP, tell them you're dying.

If you've sliced your thumb in half and face a four hour wait at A&E with nothing to do but stare at mongs and old ladies with blood pissing out of their eyes, tell them you're dying.

And most certainly, if you've sliced up your shit and are leaking blood all over the shop, TELL THEM YOU'RE DYING.

I think it's always better if you can get someone else to call for you.

There seems to be a 'If you're well enough to phone, you're not dying' response.
