Hello,

I hope I am not asking for help/advice too soon. But, I have done some searching on this site and have found some wonderful tips/links and advice around a solid snare layering.

I didn't find anything on making a "real" (recorded drum) snare sound. I was wondering if it is achievable without sampling/4over layering etc. The example is from a band I often listen to, and their drums always stands out to me in a good way. I work in Logic 9 mostly using Reaktor, Massive and Ultra for percs, and Yes, I am a beginner. :)

Even pointing me to a VST I may need to look into would be awesome.

Cheers,
toby

hey thanks ... will definitely check into those. I have seen the Slate name dropped around a bit, but not the BFD.

Addictive drums do a pretty awesome job of getting that Live/Rock drum sound. I'm personally a big fan of it's metal hits.

Additionally, sampling a live drum loop and layering a kick/snare over top of it also yields pretty awesome results. Apply all the standard edm mixing techniques (side-chaining, eqing, etc) to the phat electro drums and mix the live loop moderately loudly in the mix and you can achieve those big/punchy drums found in dance music and still retain that live aesthetic that people are drawn to.

I need to try this! I feel I am layering too much and not achieving anything but mud in most cases. Especially when using sampled beats. But yeah, I do like the solid hit of a snare as apposed to the heavy squish that is taking over Dubstep. Back to the learning board (iMac w/ Logic ;)

When using the live layer trick, you don't really need to layer your one shots. A single fat kick and a single fat snare will due. The key is making sure you're using an awesome live loops and you are using a kick/snare that layers with it well. If you get too crazy with layering while using this technique it tends to take away the live feel.

Semi-related: When programing synthy beats, I usually try to keep drum layering to a minimum. 2-3 for snares (a phat big bodied one, one for character, and if needed one for sustain) and I usually only use one (awesome) kick. Distort as needed.

that's actually good to hear ... I've been feeling anything over 3 layers on my snare/clap is just too much. I have been addicted to Camel Phat on my kicks as of late. Not sure if that's a good route to take though ... sounds big, but most times it's just not as clean as it could be, looking at other possibilities.

Sounds like focusing on a solid clean sound vs a "Phat" one is best though.
