Alex Song Vs Cesc Fabregas - interesting stuff

Image

Quote:
There’s been a lot of talk about Song’s through ball numbers this season and how he’s top of the League in terms of through balls per game with 0.7.

Arsenal play a Barcelona style of football which means that they play a large number of through balls per game. In fact, Arsenal and Man City have been battling it out for supremacy in that category all season with the Citeh team just edging Arsenal with 8 per game to Arsenal’s 7 per game.

Predictably, Barcelona destroy both of those teams with their whopping 13 through balls attempted per game. And as a result, Barcelona have four players in the top 15 in Europe’s top Leagues for successful through balls per game (Messi 1.5, Cesc 0.7, Iniesta 0.7, Xavi 0.6).

And then there’s Song. The only player on an English team who is in the top 10 and nestled between Cesc and Iniesta in 8th place with his 0.7 per game.

But you know what’s even more striking? How similar his other numbers are to Cesc........

........and what an insane talent Messi is too :crack:

I was reading that yesterday, tres bizarre.

If only Song played simple passes a little more often too and stopped losing the ball in dangerous positions.

Cesc obv, but Song plays a more defensive game hence more tackles / less goals

but in terms of service to the front players he's right up there.

@Hubie - someone makes an interesting point in the comments that he's not specifically a DM in the makelele role, as Arteta plays a similar defensive style

I still can't make my mind up about Song. On one hand he plays those exquisite through balls that you mention, he breaks up play effectively and covers more ground than anyone else on the field.

But then on the other Beedle, he has the tendency to brain freeze at crucial moments, tries the impossible pass too often, usually giving the ball away, and often takes two or three touches too many and ends up caught in possession, often in dangerous positions.

I have a suspicion (I'll alert the suspcions thread forthwith) that he would probably make fewer mistakes if he played as part of a 4-4-2 with someone equally versatile in the middle with him. I don't think he is suited to anchoring a 4-3-3.

On a very important note, arsenal's midfield is made up of guys with bizarre hair cuts. I can't even begin to understand how gervinho's mars attacks head sprouts those locks

Gervinho was so distraught after the game last night he had his head in his and RVP's hands.

"Messi has scored more hat-tricks this season than Andy Carroll and Fernando Torres have goals."

"Messi has scored more goals in 90 minutes then Torres has in 18 months!"
