Plump DJs Interview
DJ Mag and general scene reporter
Ben Gomori catched up with the
Plump DJs last week, to chat about breaks, collabs, and their forthcoming appearance at South West Four, where they will be doubling up over both days in London and Cardiff.
How healthy would you say the breaks scene is currently?
It's hard for us to give an accurate answer as a lot of places we play are not specifically breaks events, but there are lots of decent tunes out there and that is ultimately what keeps the scene healthy.
In general terms, who are the most exciting producers for you at the moment?
Too many to mention! The new Justice album has put france back on the map, and Switch is constantly on the money, but there are loads of new producers to look out for - Strider for instance and Robb G. in breakbeat…
Andy used to work with Matt from Freestylers back in those big beat days....any chance of a Plumps vs Freestylers collabo?
...Interesting....we'd love to collaborate in some way - maybe both remix the same track, but I don't think all four of us will be in the same studio. It wouldn't be big enough for our egos. Ha ha!
What has been your best gig of the year, and what made it so damn special?
We've had loads of great gigs this year, but probably Glastonbury was the best. We played an outdoor stage and the rain had just stopped, and suddenly there was a sea of thousands of people all going mad. That was pretty special.
You guys will be playing at both the London and Cardiff days of South West Four over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Which crowd parties harder – London or Cardiff?? No diplomacy please!
Cardiff!
Guess London better prove you wrong then! What have you experienced/heard of/about South West Four over the years?
We've never been before but many friends have - particularly last year was meant to be the best London festival of the year.
You’ve just brought out a new range of Plump DJs-branded t-shirts. If you could brand any other bit of merchandising with the Plumps logo...what would it be?
Definitely neck braces. There's a huge gap in the market there.
Have you been working on any non-breaks projects that you could spill the beans on? Always thought it would be interesting to hear you guys try your hand at DnB for instance...
Nothing at the moment because the new album is taking up so much time, but after that we have a few plans. We'd actually love to do a chill-out album so who knows.
Do you guys ever argue? What was your last argument about and how did it get resolved?
Yeh. Proper old women at times. Usually over unimportant crap- the last one was over a bassline. We both go for walk and then it's funny how quickly it gets resolved.
Who’s the funniest person in dance music?
Krafty Kuts hands down. The man is a leg end.
