Bukue One / Who Wan Test / PayBack Project
The PayBack Project is a label that builds its reputation by bringing good new artist to the table whereby the original is quality and the release isn’t just relying on the big money remix to sell records. Labels that put out low budget tracks and pay for big name remixes to sell tunes don’t get my respect and I also think it’s a sell-out.
Block-party-breakbeat is back and thank god for that. Bukue One’s Who Wan Test is a classic example of where big beat could have taken us if the press hadn’t blown up the scene then buried it before the music had time to develop.
Think Freestylers first album, We Rock Hard, and you’re in the same territory as Bukue One. More and more tracks like this are appearing and hopefully we might get a revival of this type of breakbeat.
Bukue One’s Who Wan Test has that live band early Freestylers vibe. Punchy drums, wah-wah guitar and solid plucky basslines. The music is interspersed with horns and most importantly Bukue One’s awesome lazy rapping style. Think Gorillaz, De La Soul, Arrested Development, cool pimping-rap without the aggression.

Luka?

I say that with absolute respect, both sides rock.

I'm eteranally greatful for Diverteds remix of Fat Cats, and Jhz Mix of Clap Your.

Are we talking about the same thing, or have i read into your statement a bit too much?

I think its a solid plan for a label to do this, it can be pretty tough for a new artist to make a dent, even when the tunes great. I reciognised name on the record, helps draw the attention of someone who otherwise might have dismissed the record.

Mr No Hands
You are reading far too much into my statement.
Off course its a good idea for labels to get a remix.
Especially a new artist.
But not when the origonal isn't up to scratch production wise.
If its a poor production then its all about the remix and that's not offering a product. Generally breaks labels arn't guilty off this but i've heard some shockers on the house seen recently.
Diverted Traffic have done a great job with the remixes and your tracks were solid well produced tunes.
In that instance its a good thing. So its hardly low budget and Diverted isn't a big money remix. Not yet anyway. Give em 2 more years and they'll be driving Lamborghini's. LOL

yeah but the council gave us those tanks for free after we helped them out with so much roadside advertising

infact one of the tanks needs a lot of work on it, lowering, alloys, spolier, etc, our next remix fee is £10,000.

anyone?

its well worth it, you should see the designs :)
