Hey all, thought I'd pick your brains for a minute. Basically, the last couple of years I've been using Absynth as my main (ie, only) softsynth. However, I've been more and more been frustrated by how long it takes to map controllers to it's functions (and other stuff too), so it recently got sold on Ebay.

So, now I'm looking at other VSTi's to replace it with. I only want ONE very nice sounding VSTi, I've been through the days of having a ton of plug ins and synths, and they were not very productive days. Thus, 1 VSTi to do everything.

What are your current fav's and why? Right now Z3ta+ is the front runner, but I'm open to other options to check out too.

No NI recommendations though, they are a crap company whom I refuse to support! Shame, as Reaktor 5 is so tasty and would solve this dilemma nicely...

I'm loving my Korg Legacy Cell at the moment . Vanguard's cool but I think the sounds can be a bit thin at times ( might just be my setup ) . I've found that I can make warm analogue hardware sounding bass noises with Legacy as well ; something which has evaded me on reason . Bit of a trainspotter point but one of the presets was the main lead sound in Aquasky's Crosswire whatever thats worth . If I can learn how to use it any one can and the ability to double up combinations of three different korg synths means you can get niceley creative with the sounds you make .

Yes, I have used the Legacy collection too, and agree it's one of the nicest sounding synth collections out there. Still, I'd need three different synths to get the full pallette of sounds, and for live use, my laptop CPU is probably only able to handle one.

I've used 8 instances plus all my audio tracks loops and loads of FX on a 1.3 gig athlon and it ain't too greedy

but it's pretty tuff in the sounds dept.

Dave got a new one called Claw the other day - V.good D&B type sounds on that little beauty!

If I used softsynths, and could only use one, the obvious choice would be Reaktor. It basically does everything. It has a "signature" sound which is now somewhat associated with IDM, but it isn't an unappealing sound.

Plogue Bidule is worth looking at as well... as is Max/MSP.

Hard to choose only one, but if NI are off the list, have you tried Sytrus by Imageline? It's not bad value at $179 but they've had 2 group buys that got it down to $59, a bargain for a very versatile FM synth

I find I end up liking some of the free stuff just as much as the pay software, check out www.kvraudio.com for these beauts

i use vanguard for subs (with three sine waves tuned in harmony and a bit of overdrive and LP it properly shakes the walls!) and i've been getting some nice lead sounds and fx from impOscar, although i'm struggling to make usable sounds from scratch. ditto the ms20. think i need to do my homework a little on synthesis really

I've heard some good patches coming out of VAZ modular. But I think Reaktor is your safest bet. Why don't you wanna buy NI products, if you don't mind me asking?
Lately I used a harsh FM patch I made in Reaktor 3 (that's what I have at the moment...I'm thinking about going up to 5 at some point, but I haven't decided yet) and stabs from the ES2 (but ES2 probably does not count as VSTi?).
