Faaaaaaaaaark sake, I've been cutting linker ads of the popular names and tunes in dance music for our little FM station. Some of them ramp up to 12 dBVU and stay there, maybe the odd blips where it drops 1-2 dB. Pretty disgusting, gotta say it seems to be more electro and mainstream DnB doing that than anything else though.

if you were 'going on horrible' you were making progress.

I am crying through those guys tutorials  So true. Half the choons I look at in Sound Forge (fortunately it's not so true for breaks, more electro, dnb, very mainstream SHIT) spend so much of their time at 12 dB on a VU meter that it's not funny, sounds like awful.

It's so bad that alot of vocal hooks are just drowned in the storm, there's a voice but you can't understand it.

in fairness that may be no bad thing where the vocals are concerned.

Can you use multiple limiters with less aggressive settings for a less noticable impact on the finished track? I know you can multi-stage compressors with less brutal results.

you can indeed do this

you can also use digital clipping to your advantage

hard clipping can be more transparent than limiting

I have just been schooled in this by my mastering engineer buddy

theres a clipping function in izotope ozone that is v nice and has superceded my sonnox, L2 etc

careful tam, this kind of talk gets people upset on here

Cooledit Pro was sick for hard clipping though. I've had paid masters that sounded worse than just over-normalising a track in Cooledit.

That said I've had paid masters that sounded worse than a fart in a paper bag, so whatevs
