hey guys

Was wondering what people thought of programs like mixed in key, and if they were accurate?

Also, does anyone go through their collection and manually work out the key on a keyboard and write that into teh file name or tag? Ive considered doing this as I know I would get it right atleast, but it could take forver! But then once its done, then it wouldnt take long to do with just new tracks!

bit of a long ting but worthwhile if you're serious about mixing to that level especially if you mix trance or anything overly melodic and ghey.

most DJs I know do just fine without it.

mixed in key is well quick, reasonably cheap 2 and you can d/l earlier versions for free (with poorer interfaces)

if youve got 1000s of tunes, fuck doin it all manually. who cares if it gets a few wrong.

A lot of guys on th ALDJ forum use it, 60-70% seems about right from what they talk about.

it can provide ideas on putting tracks together that you may not have thought of before, and it will prevent you dropping a clanger. If you follow the rules your mixes will sound samey / predictable.
It doesnt work with tracks at significantly different tempos though. The key it identifies is fine until you shift the track up or down a few bpm then its off (unsurprisingly).
Pretty good bit of software especially if you are lazy and cant be arsed to learn your tunes.

I use it but to be honest it can be more of a hinderance at times. You end up relying on it and mix the same tunes into the same tunes over and over again cos thats what it's telling you to do. Also it usually sounds cool when there is a powerful key change in a mix so now a days I usually just trust my ears.

On the other hand I find it very useful for production and sticking samples through it to match them with the key of the tune i'm writing

I have paid for it - the price to usefulness ratio is good enough IMO (at time of purchase anyway).
Latest version understands tunes that change key - big help and step forward.
I dump all my tunes I DL through it, it does BPM as well as key so it's worth just leaving it to chow its way through folders updating everything as one of those tasks you set the computer up to do while you're out doing the shopping. I wouldn't rely on the results as gospel but it's wrong infrequently enough for it to be an issue - so unless you're feeding it squarepusher vs ornette coleman or whatever, it's useful for making snap decisions with new and unfamiliar material, if nothing else... Learned the hard way to double-check in the cans first though.... :violin:

Does it automatically update the metadata in the mp3s then or do you have to do that manually?

It does it automatically, and you can configure where and how. However, it refuses to do this on a handful of tracks for some unknown reason.

check the file isn't read-only, DRM'd or some oddly encoded VBR MP3. If all else fails load it into Cool Edit or whatever, make .wav then re-encode again.

also the latest version detects tunes with key changes as well whereas until now it would try and take a guess based on the whole track, hence coming up with duff results...

if you use a digital dj package.

tbh you should use your ears. it's music, not some kind of programming algorythm. imho.
