Admittedly, I did used to sound and found lots of bands that way.

i think that would puit you at a massive advatage over all the people whose job has nothing to do with music, call center peeps, builders, checkout girls, solicitors etc... you are exposed to music and people with knowledge of it much much more than the average person

the problem is not to do with "industry models"

the problem is that most bands/acts/artists now have something to sell, not something to say

suprisingly the few that do have something to say are doing allright thank you very much

I still don't get on with the concept of making music for a living. I admire peeps who are able to do it via making music they love, but a realistic model for making a living it certainly isn't. It never was and never will be imo.

i think once you've reached a level it is entirely possible to make a living out of it. i also think once that level is reached you can do that without a record label.

it's hard work. very hard work. but probably more rewarding than schlepping a 9-5 and trying to make music in between.

an ex band mate of mine is doing very well in london at the mo. has apparently got decent studio album with people like jimmy paige, rachel stevens and other big names. he popped up to see my drummer.

'what's phil up to nowadays?'
'oh the same, what he wants to do, making music he's pleased with'

obscure or not (and yes, that did hurt tbh) i'm making music i am proud of. it may be shit, but when i let go if it i'm proud of it. i'm putting my dub ep out on bandcamp in a couple of weeks. some people may grab it. i'm putting it there because i want to move onto the next thing.

same as things like art and acting, a small minority make bazillions through various combinations of luck, talent, right place right time ness and poeple helping them out, the vast majority drift through unknown, making money by doing other things... i know lots of poeple who are talented at acting, wirting, singing etc... they all do other things to pay the bills... some people manage it though...

thats bollocks of course.

lots of people make a living out of it in different ways; as teachers, as performing artists, as DJs, they make sample packs, they write music for ads, jingles, teach youth workshops.

if you really wanted to do it, you would find a way.

Just cos you never had the courage to give it a proper go doesn't mean everyone who has should suffer from your lack of support and negativity. Why would you admire people who are making music they love more than someone who is forced to make music they don't love to make ends meet? Both are honourable in their own way.

Thats what this is really about, people who wish they could do it, begrudging people who are trying to.

I agree. I've always maintained that ideology is important in music. Gives you depth where others have none.

I'd say your comments on the subject, given you know so 'much' about it, have everything to do with you.

what the hell is everyone talking about?!

everyone knows hubie is like hugh grant in about a boy and lives solely off the royalties of his dad's novelty song about sheds from the 1970's

if that isnt making a living off music i don't know what is

whilst I appreciate the income, I secretly resent my dad for 'selling out' :x
