If rumblings are public, I interpret that to mean diplomatic channels are really pissed off. Basicly we have just watched the UN reach an impasse over what to do, Russia and China saying no to getting involved and the west pushing for "step down" and "intervention".. It seems things are escalating to the point that one of the major players is publicly announcing they are going for regime change anyway, albeit in a covert way via a dodgy turkish front.

Yes, the Alawi have all the power and money, but this (threat) is an extreme measure driven by greed (presidential race), rather than humanity. There are other powerful tribal groups in the middle east, my feeling is that they (the west) have spotted a weakness and are going to take advantage.

Unfortunately, I think that the middle east needs people like Assad etc to keep everyone in check. Whats going to happen when he goes? More unbelievable bloodshed and the inevitable carving up of spoils. There is too much greed and money out there and this is what excites the very few in our world, who just happen to have all of the money.
