A billion units of alcohol are to be shed from a range of popular brands following agreement from the drinks industry to commit to lower strength products.

The programme is being spearheaded by 34 leading companies behind well-known wines such as Echo Falls and First Cape. Dutch brewers Heineken will also reduce the alcoholic content of their beers.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said that under the Responsibility Deal, consumers could expect to see a far wider choice of lower alcohol products on supermarket shelves by 2015.

He said: “We know it is an ambitious challenge to work in this way but our successes so far clearly demonstrate it works.

“Cutting alcohol by a billion units will help more people drink sensibly and within the guidelines.”

Surely the problem drinkers, do so to get drunk anyway and so will just drink an extra beer to get to the same stage as before. I don't think the accumulative effect of reduce tiny percentages here and there is really going to make much difference. If any thing the goverment can keep the tax at teh same rate and actually increase the amount people drink in a night.

But they're all cunts who say whatever they think people want to hear. All of them, conservative, Liberal ( ), and Labour. And then do whatever the fuck they feel like when the idiots who vote vote for them.

Give up booze (it's shit), would be what I would do. :sun:

As if Labour wouldn't have tried this too. This isn't a party matter in my opinion, its a "democratic" politics isse. All these political parties need to lord it over us, rather than believing in people and therefore involving them in policies of change.

Patriarchal politics means we will always get cunts telling us what is best for us - only thing that'l stop is revolutionary change.

Personally i think they should introduce a drinking ban. As a minimum they should make people drink outside in tiny, cramped spaces, huddled around a heater. I'm sick of going to the pub and having to put up with the smell of alcohol - my liver is being damaged by passive alcohol vapours.
